Traveling to city destinations with children calls for a bit of forward thinking to ensure the little ones will enjoy the visit and are sufficiently entertained for the duration of the stay. Here at NileGuide Lyon, we are always adding to our Kid-friendly 'things to do' and activities, so you can spend less time planning and more time visiting.
Lyon is a very family friendly city to visit, and there are hundreds of kid-friendly things to do that the whole family can enjoy together. The city has numerous parks that are perfect for a day out.
Parc Tête d'Or is a particular favourite with families visiting the city. In addition to 105 hectares of lush green space - that includes a 25 hectare boating lake - the park is also home to
Jardin Zoologique da la Tête d'Or; an outdoor zoo where admission is free. Another notable park in the city is
Parc Chambovet; a lively park with lots of sports activities.
For parks located just outside of the city, try
Parc de Miribel Jonage - a fantastic natural park area that provides numerous activities centred around children. And for a walk on the wild side,
Parc Animalier de Courzieu provides children with the opportunity to see wolves and eagles in their natural habitat.
Heading back to the central city area, Lyon has many child-friendly museums that will keep the kids (and the adults) entertained for hours. There are too many to list them all here (check the best search listings below), but for a few top pick, visit;
Musée des Miniatures et Décors de Cinema (museum of all things miniature),
Musée des Marionnette du Monde (museum of world puppets) and
Musée des Automates; a private collection of automated puppets and dolls. In addition,
Musée Historique de Lyon is great for older children who can take an MP3 guided tour through the history of Lyon.
Moving away from museums, many of Lyon's other tourist attractions are child friendly. The Renaissance '
traboule' passageways of
Old Lyon will certainly enchant any child, and kids love taking the funicular from Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon), up the hill to see the sights of
Basilique de Fourvière and the
Ampitheatre Gallo-Romaine on
Fourvière Hill.
If you want to take the kids shopping, we can recommend a few shops in the city;
FNAC,
Etudes et Loisirs and
Les Loupiots, are all great places to go for childrens' books and games, and
Le Petit Train Bleu is a traditional toy shop that will have the kids captivated by the whirling of toy trains.
A few other mentions that shouldn't be missed;
Le Parc des Oiseaux (25 km outside of Lyon), is an ornithological park that features over 2000 birds of 400 species and - for something alternative -
Les Subsistances (
Quai Saint Vincent) offers courses to children who wish to explore the performing arts.
