Talad Rot Fai
NileGuide Expert Says:
As kitschy as a night market can get
Address:
Thanon Kamphaeng Phet across from Or Tor Gor Market
Bangkok,
Description:
Some may refer to this as the railway or train market due to the site's origin. But primarily, Talad Rot Fai is an antique market. Shops occupy the permanent structures. But as the day progresses, loads of cars and trucks filled with all sorts of vintage collectibles roll into the lots and set up blankets on the pavement. Food vendors are spread throughout. The anchor of all this is the owner of the two permanent bars onsite called Rod's and Rod's II. Drinks are a bit pricey and the food is mediocre, but the music is often good local Thai bands rolling out jazz, most of which is in English. Abandoned train cars still sit on some rails and marketgoers may climb in for a place to sit while dining on street food. Watch for some locally produced rum (cheap!) and the folks with the soda fountain designed like an airplane. Get on the MRT subway to Kampaeng Phet Station and come out from Exit 1 across from
Or Tor Gor Market. Go west about five-minutes walking past a series of Thai teenage nightclubs and watch for Rod's place on the right beyond a fence (with the big mural from Gone with the Wind). The big parking lot becomes a market, but the railyard and cars are farther beyond. (Head for the trees toward the back of the lot.) Things don't really pick up until after the sun goes down.
