South Bend, Indiana is one of those post-industrial cities that continue to evolve even with the changing fortunes of the industrial world. Located in the southern bend of the St. Joseph River from where it got its name, South Bend used to derive income from such heavy industries as Studebaker, Singer and Oliver Chilled Plow. But when these plants had to close, South Bend did not close down with them. And while it never enjoyed the kind of prosperity it did before the 1963 shutdown of Studebaker, it has become a cleaner, more leisurely and environmentally friendly place. With its numerous parks, waterways and nature spots, South Bend has become a haven for families and outdoor enthusiasts.
