If you want to see what a real beach looks like, head to Sanibel Island west of Fort Myers in sunny Florida. In this quiet stretch of sun-kissed heaven, you can watch a brilliant sunset with that special someone at Lovers Key State Park, commune with nature at Lighthouse Park Beach, or simply revel in the peaceful atmosphere that encompasses the whole of Sanibel. But be warned: Sanibel Island is not for those looking for a picture postcard beach experience. Here, seashells and seaweed give the beaches an unkempt, even dirty, look. But for those who appreciate all that nature has to offer, Sanibel is the perfect destination.
Things to Do
If you love picking up seashells by the seashore, Sanibel Island is a little slice of heaven. While you can pick seashells from any beach on Sanibel, head to Bowman's Beach for more varied choices. There's a playground for the kids and a picnic area there, too, should you get tired after stooping for shells in its long stretch of sand. Make sure that you don't pick live shells, it's against the law! Kids and nature lovers alike can marvel at the more than 230 species of birds at the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. You can also spot raccoons, otters and alligators in this 6,300-acre wetland by driving, cycling, walking or taking a tram with a naturalist along the 4.5-mile Wildlife Drive. You can also rent a boat and head out to Sanibel Lighthouse where you can feed the pelicans at the pier or go kayaking at Tarpon Bay. Go scuba diving and snorkeling almost anywhere on the island. To explore Sanibel on land, rent a bike and use the 22 miles of flat cycling paths -- just make sure you arrive back at your lodgings before dark since it's difficult to see the roads after the sun sets.
Dining and Nightlife
Pines and oaks line Periwinkle Way, the main street for food and entertainment in Sanibel. From cheeseburgers to sandwiches to seafood, you'll most likely find a spot for your every craving. For fine dining, check out the romantic restaurants on Sanibel-Captiva Road. There are also good dining options if you drive west to the smaller Captiva Island. If you fancy a drink to cap the night, there are some bars and pubs along Periwinkle Way, Pine Avenue and Tarpon Bay Road.
Shopping
Clothing, jewelry and other beach souvenirs can be in any of the shops at the tropically designed Periwinkle Place. You can also check out other great selections at The Village.
