Grand Rapids Travel Guide

Grand Rapids has been nicknamed "Furniture City," with five of America's most popular furniture-manufacturing companies based here. But most visitors don't do a lot of sitting around. Situated 40 miles from Lake Michigan on the Grand River, the city offers travelers a vibrant selection of fun things to do, from outdoor adventures to sightseeing trips around the area's many historic sites.

Shopping

A lot of people come to Grand Rapids to get good deals on quality furniture. To accommodate them, there are over 100 dealers and outlets around the city. Some of the best shops are located in the East Fulton district, just a few miles from the downtown area.

If you have other merchandise in mind, there are two large malls in the city with department stores like JC Penny, Gap, Sears and Macy's. There's Woodland Mall on 28th Street and, on other side of the city, RiverTown Crossings Mall.

If you're looking to buy something a bit more special, browse the boutiques and galleries along riverside Monroe Avenue. This is a good spot to find handmade goods, jewelry, accessories and a lot of other local merchandise.

Dining and Nightlife

While you're here, try at least once to get a taste of walleye, a Michigan specialty. A lot of restaurants and taverns have it on the menu and it's best served crispy fried.

There are a lot of good dining options and it's definitely worth a stroll around to see what catches your eye. But if you want a lot to choose from in one place, check out the B.O.B. (Big Old Building) a warehouse that's been refurbished into a huge dining. music and nightlife complex.

Sights

If you're vacationing with kids, add the Grand Rapids Children's Museum to your itinerary. Located in the city center just a couple blocks from the art museum, it's an interactive environment where kids can learn and explore. Even toddlers will find something to entertain themselves here. It's a perfect place to hang out for a few hours on a cold winter day.

While not a big zoo compared to those in major metropolitan areas, the John Ball Zoological Garden has a family-friendly atmosphere and is conveniently located near the expressway. There's a population of interesting animals, including penguins, tigers, chimpanzees, bears and lions. Older kids might appreciate a visit to the Roger B. Chaffee Planetarium located at the Van Andel Museum downtown. There's an afternoon show featuring laser lights.

If you're curious about one of our nation's less remarkable presidents, visit the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum. Ford was born and died in Grand Rapids.

If you feel like stretching your legs a little, Grand Rapids is well known for its many lakes and parks. Families can swim, fish and picnic at Fish Lake or Reeds Lake. Another good fresh-air activity is a tour of the city's many historic sites, which include some of the last covered bridges in the U.S., as well as many fine old homes (including a Frank Lloyd Wright).
