Anguilla- The Alluring Sea Serpent
The original Amerindian inhabitants called it "Malliouhana", meaning sea serpent, due to its long curvy shape. Christopher Columbus sailed by in 1493 but never went ashore, and it is believed that the name Anguilla, which is Spanish for eel, dates from that time. Today, this 35-square mile oasis is a British Overseas Territory. It is renowned for its exclusive boutique hotels and its 33 unbelievable beaches, all of them open to the public. Though there are affordable spots to stay, Anguilla is best know as a perfect hideaway for the rich and famous. The unhurried, uncluttered and no-frenzy ambience along with five-star dining, eclectic art galleries, luxurious spas and the charming, laid-back locals who remain courteous yet not particularly impressed with famous faces, have made the island an extremely attractive celebrity magnet ( there are even paparazzi-chasing patrol boats on the bigger resorts) which has made the likes of Beyoncé, Robert De Niro, Janet Jackson, Brad Pitt, Mariah Carey, and Paris Hilton… to name just a few, trust this island as an escape destination. You can rent a car to explore the island's dazzling beaches, but remember to drive on the left and watch out for meandering goats! Or, for a reasonable flat fee, you can hire a local cabbie to be your tour guide and personal chauffeur (there's no public transportation). Whether you seek the usual swimming, sunbathing, beach strolling, snorkeling and diving or the more adventurous eco-trekking, spelunking and seaside horseback riding, this secluded island has it all. For nourishment, you can choose from several high-end dining spots or take advantage of the many little snack stops and beach bars to sample delicious fare and potent local libations. For a supremely special culinary outing, catch a free boat ride to privately owned Scilly Cay for a fabulous fresh lobster lunch. There you can listen to live music, rent snorkel equipment or even get a massage while waiting for your feast. Wherever you wander, you'll encounter blindingly white soft coral sands lapped by calm, crystal-clear waters set in picture postcard vistas. And often, you'll have it all to yourself! (Except perhaps during those few times of the year when the entire population seems to take to the beaches and the waves in grand style for public parties like the August Carnival, the magical outdoor music festivals and rollicking regattas.
