Akron prides itself on its many distinctions. As the "City of Invention," it is the originator of ice cream cones and hamburgers. It became the Rubber City once Goodyear, Firestone, Goodrich and General Tire once made it their home. And, of course, no one could dispute the fact that oatmeal came from Ohio's fifth largest city. Akron was the home of the Quaker Oats Company, after all. Clearly, there is lots to celebrate in Akron.
Sights
The "Crystal," "Gallery Box" and "Roof Cloud" divisions of the Akron Art Museum should be your first stop. The "Crystal" is a three-story glass lobby that serves as the public entry; the "Gallery Box" hosts the museum's collection; and the "Roof Cloud" creates a striking landmark for Akron's downtown. The Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, with its 65-room mansion, is also worthy of a visit. The Townpath Trail is a great place to hike or bike. For the ultimate in outdoor fun, head to the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the Cuyahoga Falls where kids will surely have a blast on the slides, chutes and pools in the WaterWorks Park. Rare species like the snow leopard and an Andean condor as well as 700 other animals can be admired and fed at the Akron Zoo. If you're into skateboarding, head to Akron Skate Park. For a relaxing stroll, you can check out the many parks in the city. Those that come highly recommended are Lock 3, Goodyear Heights and F.A. Seiberling Naturealm. If you want a little history, take a guided tour of the home of abolitionist John Brown.
Restaurants
The city that has helped shape America's taste buds certainly does not lack eating places. Whether you want ice cream, steak, sushi or pizza, there are many restaurants in Highland Square, particularly along West Market Street. If you fancy a drink, head downtown between Exchange and Cedar Streets where you'll find many bars and clubs that cater to the younger crowd. More drinks can also be had at the Kenmore Boulevard. Of course, West Market Street on the Highland Square also has a good number of bars.
Shopping
A unique shopping experience awaits you at Quaker Square where the old silos and factory of Quaker Oats Company has been turned into a hotel and shopping center. For creative finds like handmade jewelry head to Don Drumm Studios & Gallery. If you're shopping with the kids, bring them to Chapel Hill Mall where they can enjoy the indoor carousel.
