The Falklands are a British Overseas Territory and are an associated territory of the European Union. The Falklands are also claimed by Argentina as the Islas Malvinas and were the site of a major conflict between the two countries in 1982.

Porpoises and dolphins are often sighted with the occasional sighting of whales.
