Playa Las Gatas

Address:

Zihuatanejo, Mexico

NileGuide Expert tip:

Sundays are family day at this and all other beaches so expect crowds and perhaps even a line for the water taxis. Don't worry, there's always another taxi and there's always enough hammocks once you get there. Do not forget to hold onto your return ticket for the water taxi or you'll have to buy another!

Description:

Of the four beaches that frame Zihuatanejo Bay, Las Gatas is the only one not easily accessible by road.  Most people use a panga water taxi (35 pesos round trip) taken from the pier in downtown Zihuatanejo although the adventurous and surefooted hike a path that skirts (and scales) the rocks at the end of Playa La Ropa.  The "remote" nature of the beach gives Las Gatas an isolated feeling even though you are just a 5 minute ride across the bay.

The beach has a row of seafood restaurants that serve fish, lobster and other mariscos caught fresh daily by Las Gatas fisherman.  Everyone has their favorite restaurant with varying criteria of spiciest salsas, strongest margaritas or even thickest lounge chair cushions but rest assured that you'll find fresh seafood, salty ocean breezes and a perfect lazy tropical afternoon at any of them.

Legend has it that the Tarascan king, Caltzontzín, built the man-made reef to provide a sheltered swim area for his princess.  True or not, it continues to create a tranquil swim spot for families to this day. Over the centuries, the reef has turned into its own marine life haven which, combined with the crystal clear waters, makes Las Gatas one of the best snorkeling spots around.  Snorkle gear is available for rent right on the beach at Carlos Scuba.  At Carlos Scuba you can also sign up for PADI-certified scuba instruction, fishing charters or stay on land with an indulgent massage.

While the reef provides shelter from the waves on the beach, many local surfers catch waves outside the break and, when the swell is strong, put on an impressive show of their talents.  For an even more spectacular show, follow the paved pathway at the end of the beach up around the break to the lighthouse where you will have an amazing view of the ocean expanse as well as the coastline of Ixtapa.  Unfortunately, the water taxis stop running at 5 pm so bear this in mind when exploring the beach.
