La Gaviota holds the southern anchor spot on Playa la Ropa. The fare is standard beach food although a bit timid in flavor -- most orders of guacamole, tacos and entrees require a heavy hand with the salsa and limes. However, a standout is the tacos pescado adobado. This fish dish smartly the flavors traditionally associated with late night pork tacos -- savory seasonings, pineapple, onion and cilantro -- with great success. Each order is 10 tacos so start with one order to share and go from there.La Gaviota is a very large space -- large enough to host annual expatriate Thanksgiving dinners -- which even on the hottest of days has a delicious breeze floating through. With ample tables and hammocks, it is a great spot to settle into for the day. With a meal purchase, the waitstaff will happily hold your table while you wander down the beach and back for another margarita.
