La Sirena Gorda is another great people watching spot in downtown ZIhuatanejo on Paseo del Pescador (Fisherman's Walk). But don't get so distracted by the passersby that you don't notice your dining companions... La Sirena Gorda translates into "The Fat Mermaid" and there are plenty of the zaftig sirens to keep you company while you eat in paintings, scupture and even the coasters on the table.Some people complain that La Sirena Gorda has gotten "touristy" over the years and there is, indeed, a gift shop but the incredibly fresh tiritias (raw fish strips marinated in lime) and the hearty fish tacos al pastor are undeniably local. The fresh flavors are definitely worth buying a postcard to write home about. Do try the house salsas, including a unique creamy habanero but heed the waitstaff's warnings: it's a "must try" but also also a "must use sparingly"! To cool down after an afternoon in the sun, or the aforementioned habanero salsa, ask for one of La Sirena Gorda's signature drinks, the ginger margarita and ginger lemonade that take tropical classics and add a delicious spicy-sweet twist.
