La Perla is one of several restaurant options along Playa la Ropa, all offering similar takes on beach food, tropical drinks and umbrellas for feet-in-the-sand dining. During the day, you can park yourself all day in a lounge chair with a running tab of guacamole, fish tacos, quesadillas and margaritas.The evenings bring candelit service and a front row seat for the sunset over the bay. Wandering groups of musicians travel up and down the beach and will provide a serenade for about 40 pesos a song. Wednesday is "chile relleno night" which brings out a lot of locals for this traditional shrimp and cheese stuffed-chile recipe as well as games & gossip.
There are complaints that La Perla's popularity has made the waitstaff complacency over the years, even on slow days. They'll call the inattentiveness "Mexican time" -- you can either choose to settle into your lounge chair and go with the flow or get an extra arm workout waving a waiter down.
