Description:
One doesn't often think to mix Mediterranean and Mexican cuisine but somehow El Mediterraneo not only does it successfully but with a great sense of effortlessness. As fish is a staple of both culinary traditions, it doesn't hurt that El Mediterraneo is just mere steps away from where Zihuatanejo fishermen dock their boats and sell their fresh catch. The menu is a study of simple flavors mixed to create delicious dishes and that inspire sharing. In other words, "You have to try this!" is a familiar phrase overheard here.
Particularly appealing about El Mediterraneo's menu is that it spans from guiltless pleasures to breaded & deep fried decadence. The spinach salad is delicious enough to be ordered even if you're not on a diet and the seared tuna is a light refreshing dish that can truthfully be called both healthy and an indulgence. On the other end of the spectrum, dive into eggplant parmigana or coconut shrimp and promise to take an extra walk on the beach in the morning. The wine list isn't extensive but the options are all proven local favorites.
Julian Benloulou is a gracious owner/host who has trained his staff to be attentive and knowledgeable. The decor is simple but the real ambiance comes from the energy of passersby on Paseo del Pescador, a popular walkway that edges Playa Principal. Fishermen, sailors from the nearby naval base, tourists and street vendors create a people watching mosaic. Add a little music to your evening by "hiring" a wandering duo or trio to serenade you with classic Mexican songs and your Mediterranean-Mexican experience will be complete.
