Description:
The Spanish translation for "fast food" is "
comida corrida" but don't expect hamburgers and french fries when you see this painted on a restaurant's sign. Instead,
comida corrida is a section on a restaurant's menu that features hearty homestyle Mexican food that, yes, will come quickly and won't cost more than $4 USD but that might just inspire you to slow down and savor the tastes of Mexico. Doña Licha's is probably the most popular
comida corrida in Zihuatanejo and has a following among both local Mexicans as well as tourists. The large space is often packed with families and groups of friends enjoying the equally packed menu of traditional Mexican breakfast and lunch dishes.
It's hard to go wrong with anything on the menu, most of which is conveniently translated into English in a nod to its popularity with the expatriate community. You'll find a broad range of egg dishes, enchiladas (in many forms) and multiple incarnations of fresh local seafood, chicken and beef. On Thursdays, the traditional hominy-based soup,
pozole, is served with a large plate of
botanas (snacks to be enjoyed with and in the soup) and Sundays brings a feast of
barbacoa (barbecued goat) that draws a crowd. Sodas, bottled water, fresh juices and beer are available as well as traditional
café con leche and several flavors of
agua fresca, waters naturally flavored with fruit and flowers. The waitstaff is efficient and friendly but may need to be flagged down when you're ready to go -- they won't offer up the check until you ask for it. Don't be bashful about flagging a waitress down for an extra basket of fresh-from-the-grill tortillas to sop up the last of your sauce either.
