The best hotels near Tuolumne Meadows necessarily include both camping options and a bit of driving. Distances are big in a national park the size of Rhode Island, but all the scenery between you and where you're going makes a few miles worth it. Tuolumne Meadows is a summertime destination for dayhikers, photographers, families, fishers, climbers, John Muir Trail through-hikers, and windshield tourists heading to/from Tahoe or Death Valley. Excellent ranger programs add rich opportunities for connecting with the park's natural elements. If you have a chance to stay in this high elevation refuge you won't regret it.
The only lodging here is the Tuolumne Meadows Lodge, a mellow collection of simple tent cabins, a central bathroom and a dining room/lobby. Its location is quiet charm, along the Dana Fork, with views to the Cathedral Range. Less than a mile away is the extensive Tuolumne Meadows Campground. Opening date is usually mid-June, but each winter's snowfall makes this vary from year to year; its hundreds of sites are full every night and it closes in mid-September.
Not too far off, just over the highest highway pass in California, is the alpine classic Tioga Pass Resort, favored by hikers and fishers. Down on the East Side is the gateway town of Lee Vining where there are several good motels, National Forest campgrounds nearby and one private campground in town. Another half-hour south of Mono Lake is the all-season resort area of Mammoth Lakes, where there are numerous motels, condos, cabins and campgrounds, as well as lots of outdoor things to do.
