NileGuide Expert tip:
After a long, hot day of hiking through the Mayan ruins of the Rio Bec area, stop by Mirador Maya for a cold beer or icy margarita!
Description:
It's hard to miss Restaurant Mirador Maya on Highway 186 in
Xpujil – its dining room stands under a palapa, which is the traditional Mayan thatched roof, blown up here to gargantuan proportions. It soars to a height of about 50 feet, pulling Campeche's hot air upward and away from the tables and chairs.
The Mirador Maya is popular with tour groups and serves a large menu of typical Mexican fare including chicken, beef, and fish – fresh from the Caribbean Sea, which is less than two hours away. Before you head out to the Mayan ruins at
Xpujil,
Becan,
Chicanna, and
Calakmul, have an inexpensive breakfast – about 40 pesos (US$4) at Mirador Maya, which opens at 7:00 am. An added benefit: Mirador Maya has wireless internet. The restaurant is conveniently located in front of its own hotel and is near Hotel Calakmul and Hotel Victoria, as well.
