Xpujil History
Xpujil Archeological Zone
The ancient town of Xpujil was occupied continuously from 400 BC to 1200 AD. The site is famous for its Rio Bec-style Structure 1, which is crowned by three imposing towers.
Becán Archeological Zone
Becán means Ravine Formed by Water, obviously named for its deep, protective moat, which surrounds the city center.
Chicanná Archeological Zone
Chicanná contains a ferocious Chenes-style building entrance: the gaping jaws of the creator god Itzamna in his guise as the Earth Monster.
Hormiguero
Hormiguero receives fewer visitors than the other three because it is not located directly on Highway 186, but its remote location down a rutted road means that you are likely to have the site to yourself, which is a powerful experience.
