It's a nice surprise to discover a fine hotel so far off the beaten path in southern Campeche – Hotel Puerta Calakmul is the only hotel within an hour in either direction on Highway 186 and is located near entrance gate leading to the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve.

Guest accommodations in private bungalows are spaced widely apart in gardens that have been carved out of the surrounding jungle. Each bungalow has its own private porch, which comes complete with handmade wooden chairs, hammock, and ceiling fan. Inside, the rooms have been decorated in what could be called eco-rustic chic with furniture built from trees harvested from the property; the comfortable double beds are draped in mosquito nets, which you will appreciate. Don't worry about the curious hot water heater located in the showerhead – you won't get electrocuted!

The hotel's restaurant occupies a screened-in two-story dining room and serves excellent meals.
