It is when the lights go down on Verona that the real romance and mystical majesty of the town are revealed. Scattered about the back streets and various Piazzas are countless wine bars and traditional taverns, many of which offer a historic ambiance for a wine tasting evening. More hip and happening bars can be found especially along Via Mazzini, the marble-paved shopping strip lined where at sundown youths can be found sipping on the local favorite aperitif; a mix of Campari, soda and Prosecco. Afterwards, there are many clubs and music venues to keep you live and kicking until morning rolls in.
Verona certainly pulls off café culture in style. Located in the packed Piazza Erbe is an assortment of café’s and bars. Here, look out for Caffee Filippini; a timeless café which is over 100 years old, and the best spot for an early evening coffee aperitif, or a romantic bottle of wine to share. For a flashier fix, M27 is a cocktail bar located on the Mazzini strip, and attracts a beautiful and much coiffed crowd, who swan in and out, strutting out to the sound of the resident dj. For everything under one roof, Excalibur is a bar, restaurant, live music venue and disco. Upstairs is usually where live music is put on, while downstairs they play commercial mixes from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. The bar is always full, and is the perfect place for meeting locals and tourists alike.
If wanting some tunes to accompany your drink, there are several bars with regular live music sets. Jazz bar Cappa Café can be found on the Piazzetta Bra Molinari, or for something a bit heavier, Lucille’s Rock ‘n’ Roll House offers big rock and pop acts. Those who are looking for art house sophistication, Verona offers Interzona; their prestigious cultural center, which is one of the most comprehensive live music and entertainment venues, as well as hosting a variety of art and film events.
The most prestigious club in town is the Alter Ego Club, which is a little out of the center, but definitely worth the trip. House music is played on a Friday night, and a disco mixture on a Saturday, and with a modern style, the crowd is diverse and the club is always busy and buzzing. Alter Ego is located in the Veronese hills, and so when needing some fresh air after some energetic dance grooves, the terrace offers some fantastic views. Back in the town center, various other discotheques can be found, that will definitely quench a thirst for a boozy boogie and eventful night out on the town. The best and most brash of the bunch are the Dorian Grey, and Eolo discos, which both have dance floors frequently trodden by both tourists and local party-goers.
