Tucson is the self-proclaimed Mexican food capitol of the United States, and you won't get any argument for us. There are probably more Mexican food restaurants per capita in the Old Pueblo than whole states in the Midwest. As such, it's a challenge to pick and choose the best Mexican restaurants in Tucson, but if we must, our number one pick is El Charro Cafe. El Charro, the oldest family-run Mexican restaurant in the country, continues to be a destination for foodies. Our number two pick, Cafe Poca Cosa, injected a good dose of creativity and energy into the local Mexican food scene, and it can still be tough to get a table here on a Saturday night.
For down-home Mexican cooking in South Tucson, the breakfast buffet at Rigo's is a local favorite. On any given morning, you'll find hungry diners piling their plates with warm, homemade tortillas, creamy beans, perfectly fluffy Spanish rice, and cheesy huevos rancheros. Another South Tucson institution, El Guero Canelo's, continues to churn out consistently good burritos and tacos, along with the famous Sonora Hot Dog, which draws curious foodies from across the city.
