Description:
The Princess of Wales Theatre (named for Princess Diana, with her permission), which opened in 1993 and seats 2,000 patrons, was purpose-built as a theatre by
"Honest" Ed and his son David Mirvish, who were largely responsible for Toronto's rise to its current status as the third-largest English-speaking theatre city in the world (after London and New York). Home to Toronto's largest musicals, the Princess' inaugural show was
Miss Saigon with its iconic full-size helicopter, and since 1993 it has also housed the 30-foot-long bus from
Priscilla: Queen of the Desert, the huge moving mountain set from
The Sound of Music, and the complex, multi-part, rising and revolving stage from T
he Lord of the Rings. The interior décor is dominated by the modern murals of Frank Stella, and the design of the sinks in the bathrooms made quite the splash back in the day. The theatre is also fully accessible to patrons with disabilities.
