As a former Soviet Bloc country that faced decades of harsh rule and the hand of communism, Estonia, along with Latvia and Lithuania have emerged as small, but potent economic powerhouses over the last 20 years or so. Massive development has gone into Tallinn, and it shows with the glassed, 20th century high-rises that so sorely were lacking from the Tallinn skyline under Russian rule. With many tech start ups calling Estonia home, the hotel industry has exploded for business, and this has led to many new, luxury-style hotels that were not known to this part of the world in its past. Nonetheless, you can find your high-class European fare in Tallinn like you could in any other burgeoning city, or you could also take in old Estonian life in the historical part of town, where the streets are narrow and made for walking to and from whatever brought one to Estonia back before the car made its waves through social life. So if you're in a newer hotel with a luxurious feel, business isn't far away, or for the tourist looking to soak up Baltic life in the heart of Tallinn, neither is a fun day and night out on the town.
