The best part about weekends, except for maybe sleeping in late, is a hot, hearty breakfast. Just because you're in Taipei, doesn't mean you have to miss out on the most important meal of the day. When it comes to breakfast and brunch, this foodie's paradise doesn't disappoint. Whether you're craving a little local flavor with a twist or a hefty serving of a back-home favorite, these ten restaurants have you covered.
The hands down best breakfast to be had anywhere in the city is at the Diner, a Shida institution popular with both students and budget travelers. The brunch menu, served all day, is reminiscent of a Denny's back home, with filling entrees like eggs Benedict or country-fried steak. The bottomless coffee and tea served with every breakfast entree are a nice perk.
If the wait for a table at the Diner is too long, head next door to Carnegies. The notorious nighttime drinking haunt doubles as a brunch restaurant by day. If you're really hungry, order The Big One for a sampling of all the breakfast favorites. The menu has pretty much every breakfast item you could want, and the dining area is large enough to accommodate groups.
For classic breakfast flavors with a Taiwanese twist, try the steamed buns at
Chao Zhou Bao Zi. The bacon and cheese buns, or baozi in Chinese, are pretty darn amazing, and the more traditional flavors, like pork or spring onion, are tasty as well. Bring a Chinese-speaking friend with you or have your hotel write down your order in Chinese, as this place has no English menu.
For diners with a morning sweet tooth, PAUL, located in the located in Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store, bakes up pastries, crepes, and desserts from high-quality imported French ingredients. The brunch set menu is a good value and includes a savory crepe, salad, soup, and tea or coffee. Finish it off with a chocolate crepe.
