NileGuide Expert tip:
Part bohemian boudoir, part New Orleans prohibition hideaway, the Vanguard's 1920s ambiance, classy performers and varied menu make it one of those rare cabaret venues that 'does it all'
Description:
The word 'vanguard' has long been associated with freethinking, intellectual, artistic and musical movements. You could say the same about the suburb of Newtown, situated between the University of Sydney and the 'university of life'. Seems a natural location for The Vanguard, arguably Sydney's home of jazz and blues.
And befitting such avant-garde associations, it certainly has the most eccentric décor, which is just one component of its unique charm. Part bohemian boudoir, part New Orleans prohibition hideaway, the Vanguard's 1920s ambiance, classy performers and varied menu make it one of those rare venues that 'does it all' without pretension but with loads of panache.
Its relatively small size and plush red-velvet furnishing make it an intimate experience, whether listening to the lewd tunes of Gay Paris and Brothers Grim, or the sassy soul sound of Dojo Cuts, to local pop music heavyweights like Mark Seymour or Diesel.
Dinner and show packages start at around $40.
