While foreign and fusion cuisine is exotic and delicious, sometimes you just want some straightforward, old-fashioned American grub. And St. Thomas has some of the best places to indulge that hankering, from elegant fine-dining establishments to casual, low-key burger joints.
On the higher end are restaurants like Thirteen and the Old Stone Farmhouse, which offer variations on the classic steak/seafood/pasta trifecta, along with fine wines and a quiet mountain ambiance. Thirteen's menu includes beautifully presented rack of lamb, crab stuffed salmon, filet mignon, ribeye steak, bacon-wrapped chicken, and lobster. It's a bit off the beaten tourist path up on Crown Mountain Road, but worth the trek. And Old Stone Farmhouse, an island institution overlooking Mahogany Run golf course, offers an eclectic menu that incorporates local fish and produce to create delicious creations like braised Angus beef short ribs paired with a sauteed local Caribbean lobster tail, and oven-baked Banana Fosters "cobbler."
In downtown Charlotte Amalie you'll find three semi-casual restaurants which combine American and Caribbean flavors in unique ways. At Gladys' in the Royal Dane Mall, lunch offerings include various sandwiches, salads, and swordfish and dumplings, while dinner includes lobster, shrimp, fish dishes, and the house specialty hot chicken salad, made with pieces of sautéed breast with red-wine vinegar, pine nuts, and dill. At Cafe Amici you'll find a delightful variety of antipasti, salads, soups and pastas (including the famous "Rasta pasta"), plus some of the best pizzas and sandwiches in town. And Coconuts, which offers some of the best grilled food downtown, is a good place to stop in a for quick burger, pizza, or drink.
Over in Havensight the Delly Deck is known for its all-American pancake breakfasts, while Havensight Cafe is a great place for a BLT or Caesar salad. If you're headed to Frenchtown don't miss the Frenchtown Deli, which serves up the best and thickest sandwiches on the island, along with great coffee, house-baked breads, fresh salads, and beer, soda, and wine. And over in Red Hook, Big Bambooz is the place to go for ultra-juicy burgers, nachos, and other comfort food.
