Cheap is a relative term on St. Thomas, and the best cheap hotels are not necessarily what would be termed cheap elsewhere in the Caribbean, or in North America. Not much can be found for under $100 per night, particularly in the peak winter season. But there are a few hotels that won't break your budget, ranging from campgrounds to cozy bed and breakfast inns.
The greatest concentration of affordable hotels are found in the hills around Charlotte Amalie. The Green Iguana rates high in terms of location, atmosphere, and price, which earns it the number one spot. But establishments like the historic Hotel 1829, the Island View Guesthouse, the Villa Blanca Hotel, and the Villa Olga in Frenchtown are comparable in terms of no-frills but cheerful decor, friendly service, great views, and proximity to the town center.
The Water Island campground is a cottage-tent facility in Charlotte Amalie harbor that offers an alternative to hotels, for about the same price ($99-$130 per night). It has the same amenities (or lack thereof) as a budget hotel, but with the added bonus of being completely solar- and wind-powered and only a 5 minute walk to the beach.
The Two Sandals By the Sea Inn is one of the East End's most economical options. Its stylish rooms and ideal location overlooking American Yacht Harbor make it a wise and affordable choice for those who can live without resort amenities such as room service and fancy in-house restaurants.
