St. Petersburg is one of the more laid-back Russian cities and it offers visitors a wide range of fun things to do. A good day trip is an excursion to Pavlovsk, roughly 25 minutes from St. Petersburg. The central attraction is the Great Palace, a royal residence given by Catherine II as a present to her son Pavel. The palace grounds have a natural, rolling geography that makes them very attractive. Sankt-Peterburgskii Zoopark was founded in 1865 by animal lovers Sophia and Julius Hebgardt. The large zoo is home to 2,000 animals. Zelenogorsk is a small resort town on the coast of the Gulf of Finland, about an hour from St. Petersburg. If you play a musical instrument and have a free hour or so, Muzei Muzykal'nykh Instrumentov (the Museum of Musical Instruments) is a great opportunity to discover thr inventive ways Russians and others have made music over the centuries. Whatever your St. Petersburg itinerary, try to work in at least a few of these fun things to do.
