Russian River Valley
The Russian River Valley AVA accounts for one-sixth of the total vineyard acreage in Sonoma County, including more than 15,000 acres planted to wine grapes and nearly 80 wineries. The cool fog off the Pacific Ocean makes the Russian River Valley a successful producer of Chardonnay. The Russian River Valley is also accountable for nearly 20% of all Pinot Noir in California, and this Pinot noir is produced in a heavier, more full-bodied style. Two important sub- appellations of the Russian River Valley are Chalk Hill and Green Valley: the Chalk Hill AVA has unique white volcanic ash soil which lends itself to white wine varietals, and the Green Valley's proximity to the Pacific Ocean makes it one of the coolest appellations within Sonoma County.
