Palacio de Monserrate
NileGuide Expert Says:
The palace is set in a bucolic location (the lawn was the first lawn planted in Portugal) and its architecture is of considerable merit.

Description:
Fames for its stunning Indian carved alabaster and Iznik tile panels, Monserrate Palace stands on the ruins of a late 18th-century neo-gothic mansion. What you see today dates from 1856, when Sir Francis Cook acquired the estate and recreated the palace and its landscaped gardens. A striking feature is the Main Hall Dome and the Gallery that connects the three towers of the palace. The decorative Music Room is still used today for concerts and recitals. Running through the grounds is a nature trail that features exotic flora and water features, including an artificial waterfall attributed to William Beckford.
