Description:
The Mandai Orchid Garden is the largest commercial orchid garden in Singapore, and allows you to admire the flowering blooms away from the madding crowds. Although they claim to attract over 200,000 visitors a year, you will likely find yourself alone amongst the flowers during a visit here. Less structured and rigidly landscaped than the National Orchid Garden, there is a more laidback, natural feel to the Mandai Orchid Garden.
One of the main highlights is the showcasing of how orchids were cultivated in the olden days. The two hectares of the Vintage Garden showcases a vast variety of orchids on an open hillside, grown on open beds on the ground. A number of plants from John Laycock's original collection started in 1951 are still maintained, though many were lost during World War II.
The garden is open from 8am – 7pm daily (til 6pm on Monday) and could be combined with a visit to the Singapore Zoo or the Night Safari. An onsite restaurant, the Vanilla Pod serves up continental cuisine in air conditioned comfort with views over the orchids.
