The Colonial District forms the very heart of Singapore, its neo-Palladian buildings lining the banks of the Singapore River. The juxtaposition of the soaring skyscrapers of the central business district towering over the colonial buildings demonstrates how the city celebrates its colonial past, whilst embracing its fast-paced and energetic present. A walk through the area not only provides a glimpse into the city's beginnings, but reveals some of the most picturesque perspectives of Singapore, and takes in many of the city's most famous landmarks.
One of the best ways to take in the views of this historic part of Singapore is to jump aboard a traditional bumboat to take a leisurely cruise up the river, and so Singapore River Cruises makes it to the top of our list. Other companies also operate the same route. The best place to start these cruises is at Merlion Park, our 3rd entry on the list, and from here you get to admire the sights of the impressive Marina Bay with its modern architecture.
For a bit of culture, don't miss the Asian Civilisations Museum right on the banks of the Singapore River. Here you can learn about the rich cultures that make up Singapore's multi-ethnic society through over 13,000 artefacts in its eleven themed galleries. Also in the area is the Singapore Art Museum, with the world's largest public collection of modern and contemporary South-East Asian art, the Arts House showcasing contemporary visual and performing arts, and the Victoria Theatre & Concert Hall, home to the Singapore Symphony Orchestra and showing several visiting theatre and musical companies.
