Who knows both the city of Shanghai as well as Western standards and expectations better than the expats who live in Shanghai? And these enterprising globe trotting experts live in Jing'an. Take that as a good sign that Jing'an is an area that never gets boring or dull, but where you'll find some of the comforts of home mixed with the exotic excitement of the Orient.
Near the center of the city, Jing'an Temple is located next to a shopping mall full of bars, clubs, restaurants, a metro access point and much more. The area spans out into neighboring People's Square and south to the impressive French Concession area which is home to sundry bars and restaurants of its own.
The Swissotel, Hotel Equatorial and Puli Hotel and Spa offer mid-range priced sleeping options that are slightly removed from Jing'an proper but still accessible by subway, taxi and bus. You'll find these delightful options up to western standards but infused with Chinese appeal.
For cheaper options still, the Le Tour Hostel offers a great location near the action for the price of a hostel bed, around $10 a night.
For high-end accommodation, the Shanghai Hilton, and Portman Ritz-Carlton offer the finest in Shanghai's hotels. The Portman, in particular, offers a one-stop-shop for visitors to Shanghai, including restaurants, spas, a Starbucks, the US Chamber of Commerce and many other attractions all in one plaza.
