People's Square is the center of Shanghai. From here, everything radiates outwards across the river to the east to Pudong, and south to Yu Gardens and West to Jing'An and The French Concession. For a prime place to lodge, dine and enjoy Shanghai's nightlife, People's Square is a good starting point.
Maxim's and Barbarossa are on Renmin Boulevard or in Renmin Park. This is about as central a location as any bar owner could ever hope for. These delicious watering holes make for the perfect spot to either start or end a night on the town.
For a more affordable nearby option, head to Windows Cafe & Pub on Nanjing West Road. Nearby Renmin Park, you'll find this a fun college-age hang out and dance scene where a beer costs less than $2.
Nearby Tongren Road houses Big Bamboo, Blue Frog and Malone's American Cafe, all of which are sports bars/pubs that cater to a mostly male clientele. You'll find sports blaring on the big screens while men shoot pool and throw darts and ladies chat along the bar.
Issimo and Long Bar, on Nanjing West Road, are expat and businessmen favorites right near the heart of the city. These are great places for business meetings early in the night and a bit of rowdy loudness as the night continues.
