A stroll through Pioneer Square, Seattle's historic district, can be entertaining in and of itself. But whether it's a museum, shopping or just a place to park it and relax you're looking for, there's quite a variety of things to do in Pioneer Square.
For a history lesson with a twist, check out Bill Speidel's Underground Tour, where knowledgeable (and hilarious) tour guides take you underneath the city to see the remnants of old Seattle that was destroyed in a fire in the late 1800s. After going down low, get up high - Smith Tower is right down the street and has an observation tower with a view to rival that of the Space Needle (and at less than half the price).
Pioneer Square has shops of all sorts; and once you've exhausted those at street level, duck down into the Grand Central Arcade for more bookstores and galleries. While you're there, stop by the Grand Central Bakery for a great latte and almond croissant.
Want something to do with a bit of education on the side? The Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park is more museum than park, with tons of artifacts, articles and photos from a fascinating period of time in the Pacific Northwest. Or head over to the Seattle Metropolitan Police Museum to learn more about the history and life of a law enforcement officer.
