The band generally starts playing around 2 p.m.
Description:
On the last Sunday of each month, Samba da Laje matron Dona Generosa wakes up at 3 a.m. to start preparing
feijoada (a traditional Brazilian bean and pork stew). Once noon arrives, so too will the musicians, dancers and spectators.
What started as a Vila Santa Catarina neighborhood gathering in 1997 has grown into an attraction pulling together Paulistanos from across the metropolitan area. The event regularly draws crowds in the hundreds, if not thousands, and has had to add a stage to accommodate the extra attendees. São Paulo's municipal government officially recognized the Sambe da Laje for bringing peace and harmony to and mobilizing families in its community.
A plate of
feijoada costs Rs. 5, and the band usually commences at 2 p.m.
