NileGuide Expert tip:
If you're there for lunch on Wednesday or Saturday, order the feijoada. Otherwise, go for the coxinha. Regardless of your food choice, wash it down with a caipirinha.
Description:
"A bar for discrete men, where nobody bothers anybody and where the greatest pleasure is talking without saying much," Brazilian poet and songwriter Vinicius de Moraes wrote of the original Veloso, which operated in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro until 1967.
Veloso was reborn in São Paulo in 2005 with its namesake's reputation as a favorite place to talk away the night over exceptional food and drink. In a hidden-away cobblestone plaza in Vila Mariana, Veloso serves up Brazilian staples arguably better than any spot in the city. The bar has gained fame for its award-winning
coxinha (chicken and cheese croquertte),
feijoada (pork-and-bean stew) and
caipirinha.
The open-faced watering hole fits fairly few tables, and waiting times for seats often measure up to an hour. So order up one of barman Souza's signature
caipirinhas--with flavors from classic lime to the more exotic
jabuticaba and lychee fruits--while you idle.
