NileGuide Expert tip:
For lovers of old books and religious history, the 115,000-volume library on the premises will not disappoint.
Description:
This museum is a step back in time, with a good collection of vestments, religious icons and other riches of the Dominican order of the Catholic Church. There are sacred vessels, adornments, reliquaries, as well as paintings and religious imagery from the 18th and 19th centuries. These items represent both the historic and artistic aspects of ecclesiastic life during that time.
The museum is in the cloisters themselves, and gives a view into the religious life of the priests that lived their, their religious and educational work. It is conserved true to the time period, and to understand this part of history and religion in the region, this museum is a great start.
In addition to the items on display, the "Biblioteca Patrimonial Recoleta Dominica" (Recoleta Dominican Heritage Library) is also onsite, and has approximately 115,000 volumes of great historic importance, and is considered one of the largest private libraries in Latin America.
