Description:

The Gabriela Mistral Education Museum (formerly the pedagogical museum) is housed in one of the wings of an old school, whose original mission was to educate women to become elementary school teachers. Some three hundred women at a time lived and studied here, and the museum is a testament to who they were and what they studied.

The museum was originally opened in 1941 with the goal of supporting public and private education, and helping the public to understand the trajectory of education in Chile as well as the artistic, scientific, literary and teaching-specific elements of being a teacher. It has been moved a number of times, finally reopening its doors in 2006 after the damage done by the 1985 earthquake was sufficiently repaired for it to move back into its original space.

There are more than 6500 pieces on display, including school materials from the history of Chile, including an early electrostatic machine used for the teaching of physics. There are old maps, old school desks and chairs as well as other materials historically used in schools in Chile.

There is also a more than 40,000-volume library onsite, which houses works and texts on the philosophy of education, the psychology of teaching, etc. In addition, there are more than 6,000 digitalized and inventoried photos of the process of education in the country. an interactive room aimed at teaching museum-goers about the philosophy of education.
