Galpón Victor Jara is located opposite the Plaza Brasil, in Barrio Brasil, Santaigo's slightly bohemian middle class neighborhood. Most days of the week, the venue opens up with cheap prices to see folkloric greats and other politically-motivated or active groups performing.The history behind this is clear. Victor Jara was a politically-active folk singer who was tortured and executed for his messages at the Estadio Nacional. He's considered a Chilean hero, and his music is still played to this day. The Galpón (which means hangar, as in a large, open space) was founded, along with the Fundación Victor Jara by his widow, Joan Jara. It was founded as a place for musicians who had nowhere to play to be able to perform. Over time, it has attracted many greats, including Manuel Garcia (photo, above), and also is home to cueca lessons one night a week most weeks of the year, but particularly as the national holiday (September 18th) comes close.
