Critical Mass Ride

NileGuide Expert Says:

Fun way to spend a first Tuesday night of the month, with between 100 and 500 of your new best friends.

Address:

Plaza Italia
Santiago, Chile

NileGuide Expert tip:

A great way to meet locals and see parts of the city you might not otherwise see.

Description:

The cicletada del primer martes. or First Tuesday critical mass ride starts every first Tuesday of the month, rain or shine (though numbers are considerably less when it's raining) from Plaza Italia at 8:00 PM

The route is announced ahead of time on the listed website, and people generally start showing up around 15 minutes before and the start doesn't usually happen until about 15 minutes past the hour. The group pedals a route ranging from about 5 to about 15 kilometers, often through the downtown area, making noise and promoting the use of bikes in the city. If you don't have a bike to ride, check out La Bicicleta Verde to see if they have one you can borrow or rent for the cicletada, they often have a group that leaves from their Santa Maria office at about 7:45.

After the ride, small groups break off to go to various outlying neighborhoods, and people often stop in Bellavista for a post-ride drink. Even if you don't like to ride, check out this giant group of cyclists, which make a great photo op, particularly in the summer months when it's still light out.
