Active visitors to Santiago are often surprised by just how many sports-and-activity related activities there are near the city. In the winter, skiing reigns supreme, with ski areas including Portillo, Valle Nevado, Lagunillas and Farellones. When the snow's gone, many of these same areas turn into great hiking spots, with easy access to towering peaks. There are also several hiking start-off points that are relatively accessible all year round from the city, often by public bus, or an easily-arranged tour, or you can even rent a bike and go out to them, though by the time you get there, you might not feel much like hiking! For those who are fans of cycling, there are a couple of biking tours within the city, and several routes that are easily followed, including cycling up to the top of Cerro San Cristobal. On weekends you'll find many locals doing the same. Rafting options as well as more hiking can be found in Cajón de Maipo, and while you're there, you can try out some of the local foods, including humitas (Chile's answer to tamales, as well as some local kuchen (fruit strudel/pie).
