Santiago is fortunate to have several large museums as well as more than a handful of galleries with art that varies from old to contemporary, local to from around the world. In addition to the bigger art museums, several universitites, foundations and other organizations, including the municipalities have salas, or exhibition spaces where they exhibit photography, paintings, collages, sculpture and other forms of art. Traveling exhibits most commonly touch down in the bigger galleries and museums, but even some of the smaller ones can surprise you. And museums and galleries are generally inexpensive or free in Santiago, and with the exception of opening and closing days, are often sparsely attended. Don't miss the annual Museos de Medianoche (Museums until midnight) event late in October every year.
