Santiago has an incredibly rich location for day trips or nearby fun outside of hte downtown area. There are several ski resorts within a stone's throw, wine tourism, hiking ande, all within a couple of hours from downtown Santiago, and often with very easy access for independent travelers and hotel pickups for those who prefer tours. To the east, there are the mountains for skiing and hiking, as well as some hot springs for relaxation. Day trips to the Cajón de Maipo (river basin/canyon) can also be arranged. To the west, there are wine trips a-plenty, to the Maipo, Upper Maipo and Colchagua valley, and fruther east, ocean access coul not be easier in the colorful port town of Vlaparaiso or the beachfront and casino town of Viña del Mar.
