Barrio Brasil has many faces, from an old, architecturally-preserved neighborhood where people still come and go with their shopping carts on fruit and veg market days (Saturday and Sunday), and where mid 20s and 30s Chileans sit outside at one of the many main street (Av. Brasil) outdoor cafés at any time of year. There are a couple of plazas, one well-known, and one more of a secret, lots of tasty food (there's actually a row of seafood restaurants here), a couple of bike paths and some semi-hidden restaurants that serve up surprisingly good fare.
There are music venues, a main plaza where something is nearly always happening and a hodge-podge collection of shops and minimarkets, along with a high density of colorful churches. Barrio Brasil is a good place to stay, eat, walk, photograph and feel like it's your own private piece of Santiago.
