Description:
Faded shopping centers are my cup of tea. I love the dated-ness of them, and the evidence of the human wear on the environment. Brand new shopping center seem to contrived and manipulative to me and there is nothing like questionable design from the '70s and '80s to cure that particular malaise.
Open in 1976, the Glendale Galleria has definitely seen brighter days and to me that is part of its charm. The anchor stores here are Macy's, Target, and JCPenney and this foundation does keep the place humming along.
The mall has had a hard couple years recently. General Growth Properties, the owner of this place, just came out of Chapter 11 protection in November of 2010. Caruso's
Americana moved into the neighborhood recently, drawing a lot of shoppers away from the Galleria. Part of the fall-out from this is that Nordstrom recently switched allegiance and its facilities will now be part of the 15.5 acre American expansion in 2013.
At this there are plans for remodeling of the Galleria during the summer of 2011. The hope for this place is that the Americana and Galleria can be a joint shopping destination. At this point walking between the two adjacent shopping centers is a very interesting trip through different era's of consumer culture.
