Description:
On San Francisco Street, only a block west of the Santa Fe Plaza amid shops and galleries, is the historic old Lensic where for nearly 80 years people have gathered for music, dance, lectures, film and performing arts of all kinds. Built in 1931, it was described by The New York Times as "the most splendid theatre in the West". Today the Lensic Performing Arts Center is one of America's architectural treasures and part of the Washington D.C. based National Trust for Historic Preservation. Architecturally, the Lensic is of Spanish Renaissance style that used to be enhanced by a huge stripped tapestry across the ceiling, giving it the look of an Arabian tent. While seated in the renovated, but authentically preserved space (821 seats) one can only imagine the celebrities that graced the Lensic stage over the decades, bygone stars such as: Olivia de Havilland, Roy Rogers, Errol Flynn, Rogers and Hammerstein, Gary Cooper and Gene Autry. 'If only these walls could talk'… Just about any time of year chances are good you can catch an entertaining show for a reasonable price; much less than New York Broadway prices. Stop by the ticket counter or call the ticket office: 505-988-1234 211 West San Francisco Street downtown Santa Fe.
