In a city that's 400 years old, it's not too hard to find significant historic sites to visit.
We lead with Bandelier National Monument and Pecos National Historical Park, because 1300 A.D. is pretty darn historic, if you ask us. In New Mexico, it's important to understand the Native Americans who were here first, and who still are very much here.
For one-stop New Mexico history shopping, the new New Mexico History Museum near the Plaza offers an impressive survey of human habitation of the Land of Enchantment, from prehistory to now.
Number 5 on our list is San Miguel Mission, the oldest existing church in the U.S., being built in 1610. Down the street is Loretto Chapel, built in the 1870s, and famous for its "miraculous staircase." Around the corner is the Gothic St. Francis Cathedral, built in the 1880s.
We end our list with the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, dedicated to the artist whose love of New Mexico put us on the international art-scene map. She counted many important luminaries of the 20th-century as friends, and their contributions to New Mexico's artist legacy are honored here as well.
