"The Roasting Co.," as it's known around here, is literally across the street from the near-pariah that is Starbucks across the street (Santa Cruzans don't take too kindly to corporate coffee). Visitors tend to get their caffeine fix from Starbucks because of the chain's consistency. However, it is well worth taking a plunge and trying the alternative brews of the Santa Cruz Roasting Co. The drinks are much more complex, much richer and deeper than coffee from just about anywhere else.Work by local artists hanging proudly on the walls, solid wooden fixtures, music straight from the baristas' iPods (as opposed to whatever album Starbucks, Inc. is pushing that week), and a noticeably more spacious interior all give the Santa Cruz Roasting Company something Starbucks could never grasp: it's not a caffeine fueling station where you're pushed to get your coffee and get out. Stay awhile, and listen to the music.
