NileGuide Expert tip:
Sojourner cookies are made with organic ingredients—some are even vegan—but despite their health-nut qualities, they are to die for. Cookie options change daily, and Pumpkin Chocolate Chip and Kay's Chocolate Chip top my list (let's just say I know which days of the week they're on the menu).
Description:
Located downtown, this Santa Barbara staple hasn't changed since it opened in 1978. The Sojourner Cafe's ambiance is not what you'd call sleek, but there's something inviting about the restaurant's cozy booths and seats at the counter. The staff is friendly and most have been there for many moons, so if you can't decide what to order they'll steer you in the right direction. The "Soj" (as locals call it) is open for lunch and dinner, and offers a mostly veggie menu, a juice bar, and a tempting organic and vegan dessert display. The salads are fresh (the Tofu Buddha Salad is as enlightening as its name suggests) and the entrees are eclectic and filling—dishes like the Tofu Wonton Pillows and Tempeh Taco Salad taste too indulgent to be good for you, although sides of steamed vegetables usually give them away.
