First Time in Cabo San Lucas

Description:

On the southern tip of the Baja peninsula, Cabo San Lucas is known for its protected warm waters, fish and whale populations, and great snorkeling and diving locations. Obviously, you're going to be spending a lot of time on, in, and near the water at this vacation spot.

Day 1 - Cabo San Lucas

Start off your vacation with a long boat tour around the point with Cabo Expeditions, a professional and ecologically responsible tour company. The tour guides possess a huge breadth of knowledge about the local wildlife and ecosystem, and they have a variety of tour options, including whale watching, snorkeling, and water-skiing. In the afternoon, get a taste for the rich culture surrounding bullfighting at Toros, where you can see all the flair and excitement without the goriness. Lobster's the star of the dinner menu at Lorenzillo's, which has a nice view of the city and impeccable service. The Hilton Los Cabos is its own little paradise, with an infinity pool where you can catch the occasional glimpse of a whale and a beautiful private beach, great for swimming and snorkeling. It is a bit out of town but there is an inexpensive hotel shuttle that runs between the hotel, Cabo San Lucas, and San Jose all day, so transportation is quick and easy.

Day 2 - Cabo San Lucas

There are some lovely gardens surrounding the town square in downtown Cabo San Lucas, as well as lots of nearby small galleries, museums, businesses and places to eat. Wander around here as long as you like, then go for a dive with Cabo Acuadeportes, who provide training and licensing as well as beautiful dives among the coral reefs at Cabo Pulmo and around Land's End, where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez. For dinner, try Felix's, where the chile and shrimp dishes and the dozens of salsas in the salsa bar make this the most traditional cuisine in town.

Day 3 - Cabo San Lucas

In the morning, get a birds-eye view of the beautiful canyons nearby with the Costa Azul zipline tour. The guides are endlessly knowledgeable and friendly, and will take you rock climbing as well. Head back out onto the ocean for an afternoon of whale watching, with a company such as Ocean Riders, who offer an afternoon tour of beaches and with whale-watching on a high-speed zodiac boat. It's hard to say what's better about dinner at Villa Serena: the freshness of the food or the expansive view. Either way, dinner here is always a good choice.

Day 4 - Cabo San Lucas

Lounge all morning on the Playa Santa Maria, one of the area's prettiest beaches, or bring a rented boogie board or snorkels to enjoy the waves or the pristine sealife here. In the afternoon, you can explore yet another of the area's ecosystems with an ATV trip through the Desert Park Natural Reserve, full of unique species and landscapes. Have dinner back in Cabo San Lucas at La Fonda, an innovative yet still traditional Mexican restaurant off the tourist track.

Day 5 - Cabo San Lucas

Take a trip north to visit Todos Santos, a quaint and laidback little town on the coast. There are tons of little shops, churches, galleries, and other places to pop in and visit here, but the main attraction is the original Hotel California. It is full of interesting art and decorations, and beautiful gardens and courtyards. Have lunch at the restaurant here overlooking the beach or at any of the little restaurants around town. After, head back into Cabo San Lucas, and take the Pirate Ship Cruise, where you can sail along the coast in a historic pirate vessel to feel a bit of the area's history while enjoying the sunset over the ocean. La Parradilla is the best place to go for barbeque, so head there for dinner and pick out what looks best on the huge grill.

Take a kayak out on the San Jose estuary during the morning hours for a view of the many bird species that reside there. As an afternoon activity, get another view of Cabo's sealife on a snorkeling tour with Oceanus, where the outgoing staff and great authentic food and drinks on board pair perfectly with the pristine underwater views. For your last meal in town, opt for the amazing seafood at Sunset Da Mona Lisa, which overlooks Los Arcos and the Sea of Cortez.
